• almost makes monthly 1/24

listening to : arlo requests michael jackson and izzy requests barbie so there is a lot of both happening right now

watching : love on the spectrum us s2 (finally!) and it was worth the wait!!!!

eating : cozy meals! i’ll share some recent faves below

wearing: JEANS! who even am i!? but wow they are way more flattering than my frumpy cotton pants

been a while since i’ve done a monthly post but here’s one! january felt like the longest month ever, as soon as arlo went back to school, poppy came to visit forever and it felt like a very long unproductive stretch of time where i didn’t get much done and felt bad about it.

i think every january, i get into a little slump because i’m terrible at transitioning back into full on productive mode and then i make myself feel guilty for it lol. but the month is ending and i’m finally starting to feel a little more in the swing of things. a little bit!

we all took arlo to his first musical, MJ — because gigi raved incessantly about it. we introduced him to some michael jackson prior so he’d know the songs and obviously he took to thriller! so for the first half of the show he just kept saying “MOMMY… WHEN IS THE THRILLER?!” lolllll. he was bored out of his mind mostly, and now having seen the show myself, i get why haha. the performers were amazing but the story was actual crap and they totally glossed over all controversy by having reporters say things like “gee, there has been a lot of controversy” and michael responding by singing “that’s the price of fameeeeeee”

it didn’t help that for some reason i decided to partake in a gummy when i haven’t partaken in like 15 years and was out of my mind high because my brother didn’t warn me to not eat the whole thing hahah. arlo was being very fidgety so i had to take him to the bathroom for a break and that felt like i was climbing a mountain hahah. i was like omg can we even go to the bathroom during a show? is this even allowed? how loudly am i asking gid this? then i said sorry 125 times as we rushed out and when i got to the lobby i noticed plenty of people use the bathroom during a show and it’s not illegal haha. during intermission arlo really wanted red vines and then hated the way they tasted (rightly so) and i held the red vine looking for a trash can for what must have been 200 minutes but probably more like 20 seconds. what a ride.

when i got home and still felt it, i was calling him asking how to get it to go away and he’s like JUST ENJOY IT 😆 oh ok sure i’ll just enjoy this with my two children sitting next to me no big deal hahah. anyway, i ate some soup dumplings in a fog and it finally started to fade — i won’t be doing that again anytime soon lol but it was quite a memory for the books.

    TMI?

anyway, worked on the house a little bit more — finally got the coziest couch ever and it’s made our living room a place we all want to be at all times. it’s insanely comfortable!

now focusing my efforts on getting window treatments around the house, coming up with a plan for arlos room, and working on a tiny dollhouse for izzy!

i’m still exercising twice a week with a trainer, which is incredibly expensive, so i’m trying to decide if i’ll start back up with yoga sculpt soon instead but i’ll need to go with a friend or relative because i’m way too good at not going unless i have an accountability partner.

some recipes i made and liked this month:

braised white beans with greens : very good and nice to make something that isn’t dilly bean stew for a change! (we both prefer dilly bean still though lol) i used swiss chard and added mild sausage.

chicken rice with buttered onions : this was so cozy and so delicious, but took me a long time to make. her site says 70 minutes, it took me more like 90 to properly brown the onions which is a much longer dinner experience than i can usually handle. i also had to chop three onions which my eyes could really not handle. i’m thinking about getting one of these, anyone got one and think it’s worth it? the meal was so good, but i probably wouldn’t make again till i’m an empty nester lol. also, if you like this flavor profile, chicken rice-a-roni is really not a bad sub!!! haha

garlicky chicken with lemon-anchovy sauce : i’m in my anchovy era (i blame alison roman) but this was so good and quick! it has a piccata vibe, but elevated. very good for weeknight dinner!

i’m all about adding anchovies to my chicken now, despite what gid requests, because he’s wrong and it tastes amazing. the other day i did an air fryer chicken thigh with anchovy butter (just butter, garlic, anchovy mixed together) and it was just TOO GOOD.

and — izzy loves barbie. it’s the first thing ever she’s actually wanted to watch on tv, and she hands me the remote and i say do you want to watch something? and she nods and i say “barbie?” and she nods and patiently twiddles her thumbs while it begins haha. it reminds me so much of arlo with mamma mia. she is genuinely obsessed (but she whines for me to fast forward when they’re in real world). i put on kid stuff but barbie is the thing that she wants to watch. and dance to! luckily arlo seems to enjoy it too now, it’s pretty cute how they both sit and watch together.

izzy is walking and saying “hi!” to everyone she sees now. she’s growing up so quickly!!!

ok i guess that’s about it, happy february!!!

  • valentine’s day pajamas for babies + kids

some very cute very festive v-day pajamas for your kiddos!

  • my upcoming house projects

i shared that since we probably aren’t moving anytime soon, i’ve been gradually fixing up the house room by room to reflect my taste now. i was in such a rut for so many years, between the pandemic, trying to move for years, trying to have a baby for years, then having said baby — i really just lost all passion when it came to my house and caring about making it nice anymore.

but ever since i reignited the flame, i’ve been feeling really good! i still really really really want to move and do some more major home projects, but it’s been nice to have my house be a place that makes me happy again. plus i love to have creative projects going.

so today i’m going to share what i’ve done so far and some rooms i’m still planning on doing. these are just the cliff notes, when i have more plans i’ll share room by room plans.

    our bedroom

i painted our bedroom and that felt like it transformed the room so much, i also got some new accessories– a new rug, new throw pillows, sconces and hung temporary curtains. hanging curtains made the biggest difference in terms of vibe too! so much softer. we also got a new mattress and it’s so much taller than our old one, it feels like we’re in a fancy hotel now.

still planning to hang new art i haven’t actually picked out yet, getting roman shades and curtains that are actually the correct height. and honestly i’d love to swap out some of the furniture in here. would love a linen bed and some wider nightstands that would fill the space a bit better. but for now, it feels like a whole new room!

    quilt / throws / lumbar / blanket / bedding / wall art

sconces / curtain rod / curtain rings / mirror / rug / bed

wall paint is “kinfolk” by portola paints (color matched)

    the dining nook

i redid the nook with just updated accessories and the only thing i want to still do is add roman shades. i like this corner so much better than i did before! would still kill for an actual dining room with walls someday though.

table / chairs / chair dupe / pendant light

    striped bolsters / cushions (similar)

    candle holder / wall art

    the kitchen

i’d love to add cafe curtains to the windows, a roman shade to the kitchen door, swap out the hardware on the cabinets, and the runner rug– the runner in here has deeefinitely seen better days. i switched out the stools here and we’re all loving them so much more. we all actually sit here now!!!

also… if we have a light hanging over the sink, do you think it’s too much hanging pendant light to possibly add some to over the island?!? or maybe i should do hanging pendants over the island and replace with something different above the sink.

    the living room

we just swapped out the sofa and i’m trying to figure out what to do about the rug, but also want to change a few other little things — just swapping accessories/decor mostly!

sofa (regular size) / ottoman / rug

floral pillows / striped pillows / swing arm light

    arlo’s room

this is the biggest redo for sure! i sort of want to redo his whole entire room. i love the tiny updates i did last year (adding a long desk for him to play and build legos at) and taking down his closet doors to replace with curtains, but i really would love to make his room feel not only like him, but also designed!

he was very jealous when we painted izzy’s room and i’d love to give his room the same attention.

i’m gonna share a full post with my plan soon! but he wants me to incorporate the color red so it should be a fun challenge for me.

    the playroom

not a top priority but gid is finally letting me work out here a little bit alongside him. i added a pull out couch and coffee table/play table here and would love to do a few more little things. add window treatments, add a door so that we each could have some privacy and most importantly – would loooove to paint over the sun mural. i am so sick of it!

  • a holiday/end of 2023 recap

hi! it’s been a while since i’ve done a catch up here on the blog and i totally fell off from doing my monthly update posts for the last few months of the year. it’s mid january but i’m here now!

we had thanksgiving here at our house, a last minute change because of a plumbing issue at my moms, so i got to do my favorite thing — SET A BIG PRETTY TABLE 🙂

the holidays were very low key for us because almost everyone in my family ended up getting sick so we got to celebrate hanukkah with everyone but spent xmas entirely alone.

for my little hanukkah party i hosted for my family, i made the most incredible roast chicken i have to share with you guys. you proabably know i’m an alison roman stan, well this is the best chicken i’ve ever cooked. it has anchovies, if you have a problem with that, well you gotta change. everyone in my family was fighting over the last pieces and when i revealed the secret ingredient they’re all super squeamish about, they kept eating it because it was just too good!!

for winter break, arlo and i had lots of fun doing all the christmasy activities. making the best ginger snaps, watching holiday movies, being generally just very cozy.

christmas at home alone was reminiscent of 2020 but we are really good at being on our own now, and now that we have izzy it barely feels like we’re alone. the four of us have a very good dynamic where i think it’s genuinely fun to hang, just us.

we had our favorite din tai dumplings on xmas eve (we always get like 3-4 orders of the kurobuta pork xiao long bao), and for xmas morning we had a leek quiche that turned out really good! i made it the day before and i had NO idea that you can actually get a store bought pie crust out of the foil after you bake it — i used a butter knife around the edges and put it onto a plate the way you do with a cake. FYI!

we aren’t sure how much longer arlo will be into santa for, but on christmas eve he suddenly started cleaning the house like a maniac, organizing all the shoes, folding the dish towels up nicely… the house was spotless hahah it was the sweetest thing.

after xmas izzy ended up getting sick herself, so our trip to costa rica didn’t happen after weeks of packing and prepping! in the end, i think it was for the best and actually wild of us to think that was gonna be a fun trip. izzy is in the phase where she is loving her newfound freedom of being able to walk but very clumsy so she’s constantly falling and hurting herself and getting mad if she’s not in complete control and she’s just a handful right now so an international vacation to a tiled house with a pool is probably not the move until she’s a bit older.

instead, we spent a few days at the la quinta resort and we had the best time. super low key, we stayed at the resort almost the whole time, they have a few restaurants there so you don’t have to venture out, and lots of cute holiday events like an outdoor holiday movie every night with hot cocoa and popcorn. we would definitely go back!

arlo and izzy are SO SO SOOOO cute together. it’s crazy how strong their bond already is. she’s becoming a kid so quickly and they already play together everyday. they both genuinely enjoy each other so much, i talked and cried a lot about their age difference during the years i was trying to have her, but it’s really been good. obviously every age gap will have its pros and cons, but i didn’t realize how beautiful their relationship would be with a 5 year age gap.

i say this a lot, but i love the holidays SO much and wish they didn’t go by so quickly. ever since becoming a mom, i’m always so nostalgic that i sometimes get sad about how fleeting everything feels. the last christmas that arlo will ever be 6 for, etc. i know i gotta just enjoy the memories in the moment, it’s just all so special and magical that i miss it while it’s even happening!!!

ps — i posted about this on IG, but we swear by this nasal spray now from keeping us from getting super sick. anytime your kid seems sick or you feel slight symptoms coming on, spray it after blowing your nose a couple times a day. it really has kept me fairly healthy considering all the germs in our house!

  • my favorite purchases of 2023

as always, in january i love to reflect back and pick out my favorite things from the year — the things that were the most helpful to my life and house and here they are!

    my fave face wash

    tatcha rice wash

this is the best face wash i’ve ever used! i love the gentle exfoliating it does and my face feels so clean afterwards. smells nice too!

    wall candle holder

    double candle sconce

everyone and their moms put candle sconces on their walls, but the coziness it adds to a bare wall is unmatched!

    my new armchair

    bacio lounge chair

in an effort to bump up the coziness in my house, i got this chair on fb marketplace and we love it so much! arlo sits in it constantly and i just had to include it because it really brings me joy

    callus remover

    bare august glass foot file

never in my life have i gone to get a pedicure without them suggesting i do callous removal… UNTIL I STARTED USING THIS. i swear there was one time they didnt even suggest it! it really has helped my terribly dry heels majorly.

    foot butter

    foot butter

it might also be because of this foot butter i use post shower — the combo together has done wonders for my feet!

    the best makeup stick

    merit stick

for someone who has never been good at makeup, this stick has changed my life. dramatic BUT TRUE. i just rub it on and use the merit brush to blend it in before i use powder on top and my skin has never looked clearer. (i use the linen color)

    my everyday pants

    cotton lounge pants

i wear these pants so often i HAD to include them. they are as comfortable as sweatpants but you can dress them up and i find myself putting them on way too often — i just wish they had more colors. size down! they run really large.

    my fave period underwear

    saalt period underwear

i was on a mission to find absorbent period underwear that wasnt made with bad chemicals and was actually comfortable and i’m so glad i found saalt. i get the boy shorts so theres less VPL but i wish they were slightly longer. they are extremely comfortable and i love to wear them in case of spotting because my period is all over the place postpartum

    my fave candle

    aloe + bergamot candle

i am obsessed with this scent and i’ve been buying it all year long. i dont know what it is about it but i just find the smell so relaxing and i hope they never discontinue it!!

also i love this one second best!!!

    our new nespresso

    nespresso vertuo plus

we got this as a temporary machine when our nespresso machine broke, we had it repaired and returned and we still opted to use this one! it’s much quieter and it’s been so nice to make big ol cups of coffee with the larger pods. we really love it! it’s certainly not as pretty but i think i’m ok with that.

    my favorite phone accessory

    phone strap

i’d been hunting for a way to safely hold my giant phone without using a pop socket that digs into my fingers forever and ever since i tried this strap i’m hooked. PUN INTENDED! i love that i dont have to remove it to use tripods or phone mounts and my fingers never hurt using it!

    my fave hair oil

    dae hair oil

i’ve never been a hair product person, but i started using this post hair washing and i’m loving it, i feel like my hair feels so much softer, shinier and less frizzy

    my fave dry shampoo

    amika dry shampoo

but also i’m obsessed with this dry shampoo because i dont wash my hair often and this smells good without that obvious my hair is dirty but i have dry shampoo on it smell — and it really feels like it adds so much body and oomph back to dirty hair. i’ve gone an embarrassing amount of time without washing my hair because of this stuff

    my fave OLIVE OIL

    graza olive oil

i am obsessed with this olive oil! i love that its high quality, nice packaging and still inexpensive. there is something that feels so fancy chef about using a squeeze bottle for olive oil you wont want to go back! i use both the drizzle and the sizzle constantly.

    my fave pens

    0.5mm gel pens

i got these pens for the baby shower i hosted this year and i was shocked by how much i love the way they write. highly recommend!

    my fave daytrip bag

    market bag

i started using one of these market totes for day trips out to relatives houses, etc and they are CLUTCH for baby stuff. i love that i can organize within the pockets and see where everything is. i use one side for arlo stuff, one side for izzy stuff and its just really surprisingly satisfying to use. (this is the exact one i have)

    my fave throw blanket

    sunday citizen throw blanket

WOWWOWOW. got this for an xmas present so i only used for a few days of 2023 but i still think it deserves a spot. if you like cozy, THIS IS THE EPITOME OF IT.

    my fave deodorant

    necessaire gel deodorant

i’d been looking for a natural deodorant that was also gel, smelled good, actually worked for me– and i’m super happy with this one! i love that it doesn’t get on my clothes like the white ones.

    my fave nonstick pan

    our place pan

ok so my first our place pan was good but not perfect, but i finally tried a new one since they’ve improved it and its a huge difference. the nonstick is night and day, its even easy to get scrambled eggs off immediately. i love that its oven safe now and that they have the large size skillet. the spoon rest is also a game changer.

    printable advent calendar activity cards

i made some new advent printables to fill your pockets! there are 24 altogether. a new design that feels fresh to me!

a few years ago i designed some cards for our advent calendar because i didn’t want to fill every pocket with gifts or treats — well the older arlo gets the less he’s interested in doing cute bonding activities with me, so i added in some kindness ones to really rub it in this year.

when i’m filling the advent, i usually go through a calendar and add the more involved activities to the weekend dates (i still always check in the morning before he pulls them to see what it is and if i messed up lol)

i’ll still add in a few little treats and a couple of ornaments here and there along with the activities, but i think this is a really nice way to establish sweet daily memories. i have another post with some ideas here!

also, i had a request for a blank version to write in your own prompts if you want, so i added those to the downloads too!

page one / page two / blank version to fill in your own

for the best results, download from your browser and print from your computer (versus from the browser window)

these printables are for personal use only

these vintage inspired stockings come in such beautiful fabrics and are 20% off right now!

these quilted patchwork stockings are similar to ours, so beautiful!

and for the pattern lovers, lots of beautiful ones to choose from and very inexpensive!

  • izzy’s 1st smiley themed birthday

well this has gotta be the happiest party i’ve ever thrown! i had so much fun with this theme. once i decided on it, i saw it done a lot of pinterest but i put my own simple, pastel spin on it.

it proved to be very challenging when i decided i didn’t want to use any smiley faces with the notched mouth, but i just think they remind me more of izzy when they’re the simple mouth shape! i am who i am, i can’t help it! must. make. everything. harder!

i learned a lot from throwing arlo’s 1st birthday, mostly that i threw too large of a party and he was just a baby who was overstimulated by everything. oops! so this time, i kept the guest list much smaller, basically small children/babies only, and i was more conscious of making it fun for her versus for the adults.

i hired a musician to come perform because she loves music so much (so happy i did!), and set out a few fun things for the babies to do — a play tent with balls and our water table.

    now, onto the details…

the high chair moment! i have never splurged on balloons before and never once used a balloon arch but oh man they just really set the vibe. i originally planned on getting a kit and trying to do it myself because a friend said she did and it wasn’t too bad — but in the end i’m glad i found someone to do it instead. (i’ll do it myself when it’s an indoor party and i can set it up prior!)

i found a local mom on a facebook mom group to do it for a very reasonable price and she came and set it all up day of. we added just a few smiley face balloons to the arch to tie into the theme.

i made the little ONE sign from a pair of coasters and two cardboard letters from the craft store. i put the coasters together with a rolled up piece of cereal board in the center, but a ribbon spool would have been easier and cleaner looking!

i made her a little 12 months of izzy sign with a piece of chipboard i got at the hardware store painted yellow, then i printed 12 5×5″ photos of her from each month of her life and used my cricut to print out the logo onto vinyl. i debated doing the same process for the numbers but decided to just hand write them instead with a paint marker.

i also never really get parties formally catered, but i’m the oldest i’ve ever been and all the help i could get seemed worth it. i had the food made by little nelly, who also catered our wedding! the biggest hits were the pigs and blankets and chicken tenders because everyone loves kid food.

you’ll notice izzy was eating a chicken tender pretty much the whole party, even stealing them from other guests lol.

i pictured a long kids table from the start of my party planning and i’m so glad the execution turned out cute (it’s always a little nerve wracking for me day of when i’m finally getting to see all this stuff put together i’ve only seen in my head!)

i got three tiny folding camping tables that i put together and covered them with two regular length tablecloths, just tucking the sides underneath.

i truly wasn’t expecting the tables to be used, but they were! all the kids flocked to it right away and it was the cutest little last supper in the world.

i laid out some blankets for the musical performance and it was definitely a highlight of the party for me! he brought instruments and silks for the babies and izzy loved it and danced the whole time. definitely getting a performer again.

    izzy with her nug ♡

    onto the dessert table!

i ordered a cake from a bakery and thought it was a normal size for our party, turns out it was MASSIVE haha. decided from now on i’m gonna do a small cake and get more of a variety of desserts because we had so much leftover. but it was very cool looking!! i had them do fondant smiley faces all over and i loved it.

i made izzy’s tiny smash cake and it was a fail — not sure why it didn’t rise but it was basically little banana pancakes stacked up high so she couldn’t even really smash into it or break it apart hahah. but it looked cute at least! i just did a simple smiley face with black gel on top.

we also ordered tea cakes from a bakery nearby and i made these izzy toppers to stick into them. i cut out cute smiley faces of izzys, and then made tiny party hats out of pretty colored construction paper and and mini pom poms. then taped them onto cake pop sticks!

i also got some custom cookies made by another mom from the facebook group (those facebook groups are incredibly useful! join one if you have one to join!!)

the big smiley face was just a large wooden circle i saw at the craft store on sale — i painted it yellow and did a simple smiley face on it just assuming i’d throw it on some table as decor. i’m keeping it to maybe use as decor for her room or our playroom!

for all the florals, i just grabbed a ton of yellow flowers from trader joes and made as many arrangements as i could with them.

i had advice cards printed from zazzle. i did these for arlo’s 1st and loved them so much, they’re pretty much the same prompts i’ve done for every party — i collected them all and put them into a keepsake box for her. (i use the flat menu card, size: 4.5″ x 6.25″, paper: matte).

then just spread them out on the tables with some pens for guests to fill out when (if) they got a moment!

    the cutest!!!

poor izzy really didn’t get her smash cake all over the face moment haha — i shoulda just baked a second cake or helped her more with it lolll.

and then another cake disaster predicament — i’ve seen how people properly cut large cakes but here’s how i cut ours hahah

and then the goodie bags! i do feel that goodie bags can be super wasteful, but i still usually love them. so i just put a few strips of happy face stickers along with a birthday cake flavored granola bar!

    sources :

yellow striped tablecloths / plates / napkins / gingham cups / party hats / happy face stickers / smiley face balloons / kids tables (3x) / mats below kids table / giant cardboard head

goody bags – striped bags / granola bars / stickers

    modern menorahs

been meaning to do this post forever! most menorahs are pretty tradish and boring — but when i started looking i found some really cool, beautiful menorahs!

  • our dining nook

i only just recently updated the dining nook a bit, but i wasn’t super happy with it and recently decided i’m going to redo some spaces in my house since i’m never moving at this point and i might as well love my house now! so a very easy corner to do first was the dining nook.

all that i changed out was the accessories and i left the furniture as is, but somehow it feels like a whole new space! and so much more my current taste than it was.

the striped bolster pillows made the biggest difference, i was so excited when they went on sale recently and that they were so long i wouldn’t need to get anything custom made but they would really make the space feel a little more designed.

i changed out the wall art and the light as well — the light has actually never really been centered over the table and i finally had it fixed and i’m just so happy with the changes!

i still want to get roman shades here and i think that will warm up the space so much more, but i was too excited to not share the room now! someday i’ll have my dream formal dining actual room instead of nook, but for now — i’m really happy.

and for those who are new here, i have more info about how i did the built-ins with ikea dressers in this old post. (wow this corner has come a long way since then!)

i will say that if i had to do it again, i would use the wider drawers versus the smaller ones, they’d hold a lot more large platters and just be a lot more useful i think.

table (similar) / chair dupe / pendant light
striped bolster pillows / cushions (similar)
wall mounted candle holder / beeswax candles
wall art / olive tree / flowers / placemats (similar)
